A word about Last Writes For Brother John
This dedication to the memory of John Lennon was written the day after his passing, while my four-year-old daughter and I rode a Greyhound bus from Michigan to Palo Alto, California. I had close musical ties with friends there who were grieving his loss just like I was, and so, over that weekend we put together, recorded, and mixed this work on a four track TEAC machine. Having completed the work just six days after his murder, the emotions here run deep and reflect the kind of trauma that millions of us were experiencing over this profound loss. In that sense, the song is a bit of a time capsule, replete with many references, both subtle and overt, to our Beatle influences and our great love for a dear friend we would never actually meet.
Love always,
Dennis
